DUTY FREE SHOPPING AND SERVICES
Both the 1000 Islands and Johnstown Duty Free Shops offer an impressive range of merchandise including designer-name fragrances, crystal, china figurines, gourmet food and other souvenirs.
In all cases residents of the United States who are leaving Canada and wish to purchase merchandise at a duty-free store are subject to different rules than Canadians returning from the U.S. Regardless of how long Americans have stayed in Canada, they may take back $200 U.S. worth of goods, for personal use, including 50 cigarettes, 10 cigars, 150 ml. (4 fl.oz) of alcoholic beverages or 150 ml, (4 fl.oz) of perfume containing alcohol. This exemption may not be combined with any other family members.
However, after a 48-hour stay they may take back $800 U.S. This $800 may include one litre (33.8 fl.oz) of alcohol, one carton of cigarettes and 100 cigars. This exemption, permitted only once in every 30 days, may be combined among family members.
Although the 1000 Island and Johnstown Duty Free Shops are Canadian stores, the following laws apply. Shoppers must be 21 years of age to purchase alcohol and 19 years of age to purchase tobacco. When making a purchase, customers are asked to proved their vehicle license place number, their country of origin and length of their stay.
